A DECORATIVE POMEGRANATE that once lived on a dish used to believe in all sorts of superstitions regarding good luck, to the point that he made sure that he was always accompanied by his lucky horseshoe whatever the occasion. So, the days passed, weeks too, and as New Year’s Eve approached he was confident that he would have his horseshoe by his side to bring him the good luck he needed for the new year.
One day, however, the unexpected happened: the housewife accidently hit the plate he was sitting on and brought it down. The pomegranate got so dizzy from the fall that as soon as he recovered, he was shocked to see that his lucky horseshoe was nowhere to be found.
He searched everywhere: behind chairs and sofas, as well as behind the Christmas tree. "This is extremely bad luck for the new year", thought the pomegranate to himself. Eventually, he saw the horseshoe on the housewife's dustpan, and the housewife heading for the trash can. He ran after her to stop her, only to see her take the trash out a few moments later.
Our good pomegranate burst into tears to realize he had lost his favorite charm. A wooden horse that was sitting next to the fireplace then caught his attention, and the pomegranate thought of asking it. "Maybe a farrier will help you...", the horse told him and explained that back in the old times, when people rode horses instead of cars, farriers would provide their horses with brand new horseshoes to use.
The pomegranate then went out in search of a farrier to make a new horseshoe for him. In vain, however, as there was none to be found in the village, and nobody that could direct to a skilled craftsman like that. "Farriers are no more in our age. Why don't you buy a car instead", told him a wheel that heard his complain.
He, then, remembered that a stable filled with horses was to be found at the other end of the village. "Farriers might be no more, but horses are", thought the pomegranate, then entered the stable to see if there was a horseshoe at his size that he could steal.
Yet he was soon disappointed, as there was no horseshoe his size to be found. "So be it", thought the pomegranate, and grabbed the first one available, which he dragged outside the stable as discreetly as possible. The horses, however, took notice of him, and ran behind him to get their horseshoe back.
After much running, he started sweating and breathing heavily. Soon he realized that it would be very difficult to get away from the horses. He, then, quickly discarded the horseshoe and hid behind a bush. The horses took their stolen item back and returned to the stable, happy enough with their success that they didn't bother looking for the thief. Thank God, the pomegranate escaped them.
"And now what will bring me luck for the new year?", the pomegranate exclaimed in despair. The sight of fireworks in the starlit sky disappointed him even more, as he realized it probably meant that the New Year had found him without a lucky horseshoe in his possession.
A four-leaf clover appeared in front of him then and the pomegranate thought of asking it whether it would indeed bring him bad luck to have lost his horseshoe. The clover came back at him with a poem:
"My first leaf is for faith...
My second for hope...
My third for love...
And the fourth for good luck!"
It then explained to him that if he had the first three, that is faith, hope and love, he would have no need of a lucky charm, as he already had all that he really needed to guarantee the new year would be a prosperous one.
As soon as he heard the clover’s wise words, our good pomegranate took the way back home with a smile on his face. From that day he realized that he had no need of charms to bring him good luck for the new year, as faith, hope and love was all that he needed.
