A HEATER that once lived in a household had gotten tired of working nonstop during winter. She longed to see the bright Sun shining in the skies again and patiently waited for Summer to come again.
Everything changed when the housewife one day threw her a torn piece of newspaper which claimed that the Sun was shining in distant Australia. Our good heater was troubled to hear that the weather was warm and welcoming there, contrary to what she was used to in the northern hemisphere for those months, as the two hemispheres have opposite seasons. "Australia is where I want to be!", the heater exclaimed and went straight to her laptop to buy tickets. "Well, what if it gets cold by the time you get there?", the home appliances asked her, yet so tired was she of the bad weather that she would have none of it, even buying the most expensive tickets she could find online. After packing her bags, she took a taxi to get to the airport. Underway, she was met with a rain shower, however, and the taxi happened to get stuck in the traffic jam. By the time she reached the airport, her airplane had already left for Australia. Disappointed, our good heater went back home. "I could use the train then", she thought and bought a ticket on the internet. "The train will take considerably longer than the airplane", the home appliances warned her again, yet she stubbornly insisted. She boarded the first train and went from country to country so as to get to see the Sun. She travelled, and travelled, changing carriages so many times that she eventually lost count. She even went through cold mountains and valleys covered with white snow. Yet, the Sun was nowhere to be found. When at some point she got tired, she missed her home. "Maybe it's Summer back in Greece after all this travelling", thought the heater and bought a ticket to get her there. Much to her disappointment, however, the calendar indicated that only a few weeks had passed. As soon as she was back in Greece, the sight left her speechless: the Sun shone bright in the skies, as if it was already Summer. "How could this possibly be?", wondered the heater and checked her calendar again to be on the safe side. It was still January. A cute bird, a kingfisher, then flew right in front of her and on a rock to enjoy the sunlight and give birth to her eggs. "This is the brightest Sun one can find in the whole year", the bird told her and explained to her that every January, and for only just a few days that is, the Sun comes out to remind everyone that Summer is not that distant as it may seem and that they still have something to hope for. These are the so called 'halcyon days' during which the bird normally gives birth. Eventually, our good heater got what she wanted, not in distant Australia but rather in her home. After enjoying the heat of Sun’s rays, she went back to her position at the house where she waited patiently for Spring and then Summer to come....
