A FOUR-LEAF CLOVER that once lived in a field was rumored to bring good fortune to every around him. “Since I bring good luck to others, why can’t I make something out of it?”, the clover wondered one day that he realized others used him for the good luck that he brought to them.
So, one day that the farmer came to gather straw bale, our good clover grasped the opportunity and presented himself to him. As soon as the farmer saw the four-leaf clover, he instantly picked it up and placed it on the top of his hat, thinking that it would bring him good luck. He then filled his cart with bale straw and rode to the nearest marketplace to sell it.
“Maybe I can ask a share of the profit”, the clover thought. Yet, instead of making money, the farmer quarreled with the merchant to whom he would sell the straw. So big was their fight even, that the farmer angrily threw his hat to the ground, and the clover ran to avoid being trampled on.
Two gamblers collected him a few meters down the road. “Since I’ll bring them luck, they have to give me a share of their winnings”, the four-leaf clover thought, and so the first of them wore the clover on the lapel of his shirt. After agreeing on taking turns in wearing the clover, they went to the nearest gambling club to try their luck. The clover brought them great luck that day, and so they made a fortune, yet when the time came to share the winnings, they wouldn’t stop fighting with each other.
“You wore the lucky clover longer than we agreed”, the first one told the other, and started punching each other. The other gamblers gathered around them to watch, even cheering and betting on who would beat the other. So great was the fuss caused, that, eventually, the police arrived to stop them, and the four-leaf clover ran to avoid being accidentally trampled on. No matter how hard the gamblers searched for it, they wouldn’t find it anywhere.
A few minutes later, the clover met a company of goblins. “Best avoid these folks, lest they trample on me!”, the clover thought and ran away. Yet, the goblins followed it, until it walked inside a horse stable. To protect itself even, it hid behind a bale of straw so they wouldn’t find it. The goblins kept searching for it, until the stable owner showed up, who took a rake and drove them out.
“I might as well have just found my new customers”, the four-leaf clover said with excitement as soon as it realized the horses inside the stables took part in horse races. It then thought of making a deal with the horses and requesting a share of their winnings in their upcoming races. As soon as it saw a pair of lucky horseshoes hanging from the wall, however, it got curious as to why they had not thought of the same plan before, asking them: “how come you haven’t made a fortune for yourselves yet?”
“It’s because no matter the good luck we bring to others, we ourselves are doomed to be trampled on by the horses wearing us”, they answered.
Our good clover was so shocked to hear it. From that moment on, it decided never to try its luck again, and always pay attention to its company so as to avoid suffering the same fate.
