A PAPER ANGEL that once lived in a household dreamt of reaching the moon one day. Yet, as he was tied to the fireplace from a small metal chain, he was sad for not being able to fly. And so, the days passed, and the angel prayed for some miracle to happen.
When New Year's Eve came and as the housewife cleaned the fireplace, she happened to accidentally hit the chain with so much force that it broke. The angel then fell on the floor. "This is my chance to fly!", he told the other Christmas ornaments with excitement, yet, they burst into laughter to hear it. "You can’t fly, as your wings are made of paper", they told him, and he got disappointed. As soon as he used his wings to fly, however, he realized they were so weak he barely even managed to lift from the ground.
So, he thought of the following trick: he cut a big piece of newspaper that the housewife had left next to the fireplace and shaped it into a paper plane on which he sat. The other ornaments then blew air to help the plane take off. So it happened. The plane took off and started making circles. The angel flew above couches and sofas, tabletops and vases. At some point, he even touched the star that was topping the Christmas tree. As soon as he headed for the window, however, the plane crashed on the glass and its tip bended. The angel jumped off to save himself and hang from the curtain.
"If only I had the wings to fly to the moon", the plane murmured, and looked out of the window where he saw the birds flying free. As he tried to open the window to get out, however, the housewife approached, collected him and placed him back on the fireplace. Our good angel kept praying for some miracle to happen. And so time passed, and the angel didn't even realize it when the clock ticked twelve and the housewife switched the lights off to welcome the new year.
Seeing he wouldn't fall asleep, the other ornaments asked him at some point: "Will you finally stop believing in miracles?”. No sooner had they finished the phrase, than a sound was heard coming from the chimney, and they all realized it was Santa Claus who had come to give them their presents. Our good angel believed his prayers had been heard, and that he would soon be given real wings with which to fly. Yet, he was really disappointed to see Santa Claus coming out of the fireplace and leaving nothing for him.
"What about the wings I asked?", the angel asked, and Santa Claus found it really strange that one would ask for such an unusual gift. The angel then explained to him that his dream was to fly high as the moon, and that he didn't stop praying not even for a minute for his dream to become a reality.
"Maybe I can do something for you today!", Santa Claus told him. They, then, both climbed up the chimney and the angel sat next to him on his sleigh, flying all the way to the moon. So, our good paper angel got what he wanted.
