A CHRISTMAS GIFT was once very curious to get to know its recipient. Since the time it was placed under the Christmas tree at the town square along with all the other presents, the gift kept waiting day and night in the cold. "I'm certain I'm destined for some little Prince", the present kept saying to the other gifts, unable to read the label that was placed on top of it.
Yet, the days passed, and no one came searching for it or any of the other gifts under the tree. Just before the coming of the New Year, the gift decided to finally act, as it seemed that it would otherwise end up staying there forever. "Maybe my recipient was not notified on time", the gift thought and started contemplating ways to discover who the recipient might be.
First, the gift knocked on the doors of well-of people, thinking it was meant to be delivered to some rich kid. Yet, the very first door it knocked on, it was let down, as the kid that showed up didn't even bother checking the label on it: "That's no proper wrapper for a gift", the kid said in disgust and simply shut the door on the gift’s face.
The gift didn't give up that easily. It knocked on the second mansion, patiently waiting for someone to show up. After much waiting, it went to the next mansion. And then the next, and the one after it. "How could they not have been notified?", the gift worried, and kept knocking the doors of rich houses, never to end up being received by anyone. The last mansion it knocked the door of, the child simply laughed and gave it a good kick.
As the gift realized time had passed and that everybody was preparing for the clock to tick twelve to welcome the new year, it got worried not to have found a recipient. Much to its good fortune then, a beggar found it, who looked at it with great lust. As he read the label on it, however, he murmured: "Best not keep this present for myself".
So, he took it back to the square, where he placed it under the big Christmas tree along with the other presents. Yet this time, the square was filled with people, both grown-ups and children, who had come to welcome the new year, whereas just below the tree a music band of orphans singing the Christmas carols were to be found.
The beggar cautiously placed the gift next to the others and sat in his corner without making any noise. As soon as the orphanage choir finished their singing, each child received their gift filled with joy. So, our good gift finally found its recipient, that is, an orphan who had lost both parents, and who screamed with joy: "My God what a beautiful wrapper!"
