A FIR TREE that once lived in a forest was very short, to the point that a slender man or even a well-built child would be considered taller. The fir couldn't reach as high so as to speak to the other trees, but could overhear their discussions, to which it paid much attention.
"I am the glory of the forest", said the oak tree that was sitting next to it. "Look at my glorious trunk and my strong branches, which reach all the way up to sky! Humans trust my wood to build the most durable ships, with which they cross the distant oceans without taking any water in".
"My wood is used to make the most beautiful pieces of furniture", a beech tree that lived in proximity replied. "The fame of my wood has reached even Mount Olympus, and the Gods themselves have chosen me for their furniture".
"My wood is the noblest of all", boasted a maple tree. "No wonder why humans choose it to make the most prized music organs from it".
"What about me? Of what use am I to humans?", asked the tiny fir tree. All three trees then replied with one voice: "Judging from your height, you 're only good for a Christmas tree".
A poor woodcutter then happened to pass by, who cut all four trees from the root. And while he made planks out of the other trees, he kept the fir tree intact.
He took care of it, decorated it, and hanged Christmas balls of all colors on its branches. He also placed golden wreaths around the tree, a star on its top and presents on its base.
When Christmas came and the woodcutter's children came in the room, he opened the presents from which he took out a wooden ship, a rocking chair and a violin. When they asked him about the presents, he told them: "A few days ago I came across an oak, a beech tree, a maple and a fir, from which I carved all these beautiful gifts. I found the fir tree so cute, however, that I thought it would be better to keep it". So, the children sat around the fir and sang for this very special day.
"Now I understand my use", said the fir tree. "I serve to bring joy to children, being short and delicate myself".
