A CUP that once lived in a household had great talent in fooling others. So charming were her lies that the other cookware and silverware in the cupboard had a really hard time understanding her motives. So much did she even enjoy her success, that one day she thought of taking advantage of her fortune-telling skills to become famous.
"I see it in the future clearly. Right before the clock ticks 5:00, the housewife will fill you up with hot tea”, the coffee cup told the teapot, who found the forecast rather strange. Only a few hours later, however, just before the clocked ticked 5:00, the housewife filled the teapot with freshly boiled tea, with which she served her guests from England.
"How did you know?", the teapot asked the coffee cup. “My gift has been passed on to me by my grandmother who came from Smyrna in Turkey", claimed the coffee pot. In reality, however, she had only overheard that the housewife was expecting guests from England the day before. The teapot shook with amazement at the accuracy of the prophecy, believing the coffee pot to be some sort of gifted clairvoyant. So excited did the teapot get, that she made sure everyone in the kitchen know. Soon enough the silverware of the cupboard swarmed to the great fortune - teller to ask what the future held for them. And the coffee cup in turn improvised a plan so as to make an even more striking impression: she bought a crystal ball which she placed on a round table, as well as a Persian carpet to sit on. After setting up her space, she announced that she would charge fifty euro for every prediction. First came the knife, second the candlestick, and right after them the cooking pot. The coffee cup tailored her words to each customer, flattering them, always telling them what they wanted to hear, and pretending that the messages were not of her own but rather that she was receiving them through the crystal ball: "The housewife thinks really high of you, she will have you cut a big cake tomorrow - She's really fond of you every time she reads a book - cooking pasta everyday seems to have worn you down but great deeds await you the next time she opens the recipe book". And then she promised even greater things so as to keep their attention: "You will make a lot of money - plan for many pleasures ahead - admirers will soon flock to get your affection". So quickly did she rise to fame that soon there was not a single silverware item that didn’t give her good money in exchange for her nonsense. Many days later, and after they had all run out of money, they got really puzzled that not even half of her predictions had come true. What troubled them even more, however, was the fact that she never predicted misfortunes or failures. "I saw everything, but preferred not to tell you so you don't lose heart", she justified herself. "I've made a fool of everybody and made a fortune for myself. Now it's time to fool the housewife as well!", the fortune - teller cup boasted, and asked the coffee maker to fill her with fresh turkish coffee. She then positioned herself at the tabletop and waited for the housewife to wake up. When she did, however, and as he had not had any coffee yet, she accidentally hit the cup and threw it on the floor, spilling the coffee all over the carpet. The cup was torn into a thousand small pieces, and the cookware and silverware of the household were in awe. "Oh well, you know what they say: it's good luck if you spill coffee!", the housewife exclaimed, then picked up the pieces of the broken cup to throw them to the dustbin. The cookware then wondered: "If she really saw everything, how come she wasn't cautious enough not to sit near the edge of the tabletop?"...
