AN ICE CUBE that once lived in a freezer dreamt of one day playing in a hockey game. Yet every time he asked the other ice cubes to organize a match, no one did him the favor. “The freezer is no place for big dreams”, they answered and every time he asked them again, they simply ignored him.
One cold winter day the housewife happened to open the freezer’s door and take the ice pack out so as to make frozen yoghurt. The ice cubes were very scared to see her, and hid, as they had never been out of the freezer. Coming to terms with the fact that he would never make his dream a reality unless he acted on it, our good ice cube grasped at the opportunity and jumped. Then, to make sure no one would take notice, he hid behind the breadbox on top of which the housewife had forgotten a newspaper. “It’s so warm and cozy here!”, the ice cube exclaimed as he saw the housewife placing the ice pack back in the freezer and closing the door. Then, and as she was busy, the ice cube curiously read the newspaper. The headlines of the following news caught his attention: “Hockey tournament to take place in the new ice-skating arena of our city”. “There’s my chance!”, thought the ice cube and dropped the newspaper. He, then, approached the half- open window of the kitchen, and gave a big jump to get to the garden of the house which was all covered with snow: from the biggest and tallest tree, to the smallest flower and plant. He courageously walked to the main entrance and roamed through the streets of the city to find the ice- skating arena. He walked through the dark night, until the cold wind started blowing at his face and the first drops of sleet made his stride difficult. “Reminds me of the freezer…”, he murmured and wondered whether he would, indeed, manage to make his dream a reality. A little later, he saw a flashing sign “ICE-SKATING ARENA” in front of him. Giving it little thought, he reached for the entrance. As soon as he found it, however, he got very disappointed to see a plump man with a scarf and a cap placing huge chains and locks on it, then putting the key in his pocket and leaving. “I’m sure there will be some other way for me to get in”, the ice cube complained and then scanned the walls of the arena to find some entry or gap from which to sneak inside. He spent the whole night searching nonstop, without really getting anywhere, until early in the morning the first rays of sunlight hit him. “It’s futile”, the ice cube murmured as he realized the walls of the arena were too high for him to jump inside. Tired from trying too hard and disappointed, he dug a hole in the snow to get some rest and protect himself from the sunlight that would surely cause him to melt. “An ice cube!”, a child’s voice was heard saying. It was a group of children who came close, picked the ice cube up and then threw it inside the ice-skating area. They then unlocked the door and went inside to play. “There’s my chance to make my dream a reality!”, the ice cube thought and placed himself next to the hockey disk. “Why don’t we play with the ice cube instead?”, the children exclaimed playfully and started exchanging passes, using their hockey sticks. Eventually, our good ice cube made his dream a reality. So excited did he get, that he even asked the hockey disk to exchange roles permanently....
