ONCE UPON A TIME there was an exotic fruit that came from Indonesia, who took the courage to present himself to the fruit and vegetables of the garden: “My name is Durian and I have come from the other side of the world to prove to you that I am your King”, he proudly exclaimed.
They were very impressed to hear his words, yet they wondered whether there was any truth in them. “If the animals have a King, so should we”, they thought and gathered around the mysterious fruit to learn more. That very moment the avocado and the mango stood up and presented themselves as well.
“I should be your King, as I am the most healthy fruit on earth”, said the avocado. The other fruit and vegetables were in awe just to hear the words.
“No, I am your rightful King”, said the mango, “as I am the most tasty fruit of all”. The other fruit and vegetables burst into applause to hear him. “Nonsense. I am the true King, as my stem looks like a crown”, said the Durian and showed them his long stem. Indeed, it looked much more majestic than the stems of the other fruit, and along with its many thorns seemed like a real crown. “Yes, but you have a bad smell!” the mango and the avocado, told him with one voice, and the other fruit and vegetables agreed. Not really able to find a solution, they started fighting with each other to decide who should be King. A wild tiger appeared then unexpectedly. “Let’s see who the Queen of the Jungle picks!”, shouted the fruit and vegetables in terror and quickly hid behind trees and big rocks to avoid their fate. The tiger walked past both the avocado and the mango, but as soon as she saw the Durian, she grabbed it with her claws and devoured it. “He was indeed a King!”, the other fruit and vegetables exclaimed with a trembling voice, seeing the tiger making her pick, only to conclude: “as the tiger who only eats meat chose the Durian instead of all the other fruit”. Then they all contemplated on what it truly meant to bear the responsibility of being a King. As soon as the tiger left, they came out of their hideouts and offered the title of the King to whoever wanted. Well, nobody accepted....
